Windsurfing Race Victory

·2 min read·338 words
During a school trip, our group went windsurfing. We boarded unusual-looking boats, each with two levels capable of holding a few people. We began climbing onto the first boat, but finding there wasn't enough space, two more arrived. We climbed onto one, and everyone wanted to get to the boat with the popular kids, so we jumped from the second level of one boat to the other. Everyone tried to get onto their preferred boat; I was the last one on one of the boats. Then, we were told we would be racing. I didn't really care about the race, so I thought I'd just cruise alone to the finish line, indifferent to my performance. But before the race began, the kids on the popular boat noticed I was alone and started making fun of me, calling me a loser. One of them even made a hateful comment about my race. They got me riled up. I retorted, "Fuck you, you Nazis!" The race began, and I had an important realization: since I was alone on my boat, it meant it was lighter. Furthermore, if I jumped up and down, I could create a rocking motion that would propel me forward faster—something the other boats couldn't effectively do as it would require everyone to be in sync. So, at the start, everyone was ahead of me, but once I grasped these advantages, I began jumping, quickly gaining on them. In fact, I went so fast that my boat lifted into the air, and I flew across the finish line far ahead of anyone else. Everyone came to me, cheering and congratulating me. I told them I hadn't expected to win. I genuinely didn't care about the race, and if it weren't for those "Nazi fucks," I wouldn't have taken it seriously at all. And one of the kids repeated that back to me as if it were a profound lesson, saying, "It's often those who don't care, but get riled up by those who do, that ultimately win."
