The Time-Looping Dream of Awakening and Formlessness

·6 min read·1,221 words
I found myself at the entrance of my high school, holding a time travel device. I wasn't fully awake, but deep within the narrative of a dream. My mission was to deliver a specific form to a student, convincing him to willingly agree to teach others. This student was represented by Jared, a boy from my childhood who was intelligent but a bit conceited. Upon arrival, the first thing I saw was a cat, so I paused to pet it. Then, I headed into the school. Unsure of Jared's whereabouts, I gravitated towards the math classroom, where many of my high school dreams typically unfolded. There, I met Bianca, a childhood friend who immediately offered to help. We couldn't find Jared during that period, so I activated the time machine, instantly finding myself back at the entrance with the cat. Once again, I pet the cat, then quickly located Bianca. We decided to go to the school offices to retrieve Jared's class schedule. After some effort, we found his class, but it was locked. So, I pressed the time machine button again. Petting the cat once more, I found Bianca and we rushed directly to the classroom. It hadn't started yet, and Jared wasn't there. We asked some of the students who had arrived if he attended this class, and they confirmed it. We then waited outside for him. When he appeared, we approached him, offering the form and asking him to teach. He rejected it, expressing that he didn't feel proficient enough in the subject and believed teaching would be a waste of everyone's time. In a moment of frustration, I grabbed him by his collar and slammed him against the wall, demanding if he knew who I was. When he said no, I realized I must not attend this school in this particular timeline, giving me free rein to act as I pleased. I asked him again, but he refused once more. This time, I threw him down the stairs before activating the time machine to try a different tactic. After petting the cat yet again and finding Bianca, we devised a new plan instead of waiting outside. We would attend the class with him and trick him into accepting. Bianca sat in the front of the classroom, while I sat behind Jared. As the class began, and the teacher reviewed his work, Bianca intentionally let papers slide from her desk to the floor. The teacher, unaware of her deliberate action, picked them up. He began distributing them, first returning papers with Bianca's name, then handing one to Jared. Jared initially expressed doubt about his suitability for teaching, but the teacher insisted he could make a difference. Convinced, Jared agreed. After this, the teacher walked over to me and said he was glad I was back after having left months ago. I was initially shocked and felt a pang of guilt for what might have happened to that version of him in the previous timeline due to my actions. Then, suddenly, I 'awoke' within the dream itself. I walked to the front of the classroom, recalling an earlier intention to awaken others in my dream once I 'awoke'. I immediately told the class, 'Awaken Buddha!' The fabric of the classroom began to become shaky, so I stopped. I observed that some of the people in the room had duplicated, indicating an incomplete awakening. I asked the partially awakened individuals why, every time I tried to awaken them in dreams (realizing they were facets of myself, aspects of Buddha), this happened. They conveyed that I was awakening into all of them simultaneously, and I was untrained in holding multiple perspectives. The teacher then instructed me to awaken only one person. I first looked at the person directly in front of me, but the teacher gestured to the side. There, a beautiful girl with fair skin and no visible flaws appeared out of nowhere. He told me to awaken into her. I went to her, placed my hand on her shoulder, and told her to awaken. Everything vanished into a void, with only consciousness remaining. For a moment, I feared it had happened again – that my attempt to awaken someone had simply ended the dream. But after a few seconds, the darkness of the void began to take shape. Slowly, I awoke as that girl, back in the classroom. I looked at my hand and saw a familiar mark from my real life, leading me to believe the awakening hadn't taken place and I was still in 'my' original dream body. I voiced this to the teacher, but the entire class corrected me, insisting I was in her body and telling me to look forward. There she was, still appearing as a girl (though it was unclear if this meant she was now in my body, or if she was still 'her' but transformed), but she now had scars all over her, her skin was pale, and she wore different clothes. I turned to the teacher, about to ask something, but before I could, he said, 'You wonder how this happened? You are 'formless'.' I told him that wasn't my intended question (I had intended to ask how to awaken more individuals, but his response, though indirect, provided a deeper understanding that answered my underlying question). Nevertheless, I found his point intriguing. I then asked him if it was akin to Sunyata, where we are emptiness, and form is emptiness, and that if we take up one form, we can take up another, as we are the underlying emptiness. Suddenly, I returned to the void, and then awoke in a barren wasteland. I was still conscious and retained full recollection of everything that had just occurred. My initial thought was to dissolve back into the void to return to a familiar state. However, I decided that since all of this was emptiness anyway, why go back when any location could be the same? I then saw a terrifying lava monster. Without fear, I struck it in the face. My hand dissolved, and the monster's head replaced it. I ripped off its head (which was now my new hand), and some lava splattered onto my left hand, burning off a few fingers. I felt no despair, understanding it was a dream, despite experiencing physical pain from these actions. I began to walk around and soon realized I was in Nazi Germany. I saw a group of Jewish people protesting in the street. I walked past them, not giving it much thought, until I saw a Nazi soldier approaching, intending to kill them. I smashed my new lava hand through him to stop him. More soldiers began to appear, and I killed them as well. However, an overwhelming number then emerged, and they started to break through my defenses, necessitating the Jewish people to join the fight. I began swinging my lava hand wildly, inadvertently hitting some of the very people I was trying to protect, killing them too. I reasoned that without my intervention, they would all have died, so a few accidental deaths to save the majority was acceptable. Feeling that I could not be killed, the lava in my hand began to cool down, and it was no longer as effective at striking through enemies. Then, the dream ended.
