Freedom From Everything

·2 min read·330 words
I found myself at a school, working as a junior detective. I was talking to a group of children who had all collected some money, except for one boy, who strongly resembled a younger version of the lead from the show 'Psych.' The other kids called him greedy, accusing him of taking money without ever contributing. They warned him that he would never be free in the future if he didn't start caring about acquiring it. I interjected, telling them, "One day, this kid will be more free than any of you because he isn't a prisoner to money. For who can be more free than the man who is free *from* everything, not *with* everything?" After that, I headed to the classroom where witnesses to a murder were gathered. While waiting for my senior partner, I looked around and recognized the students as my old high school classmates. In that moment, I became fully lucid. This was unusual, as I typically need to speak to someone to trigger lucidity, but this time it was spontaneous. I stood there, savoring the awareness, without needing to announce it was a dream to reinforce the state. My senior detective then appeared. He spoke for a moment before writing English sentences on the board. As he did, my lucidity vanished and my subconscious took over. My old insecurities about English, amplified by the presence of my former classmates, pulled me back under. It felt like a demonstration that even when fully awake, I can easily fall asleep again if I retreat from the present into a past self that no longer exists. Later, now completely non-lucid, I was outside and saw the person who had been described as the murderer. The suspect, just a kid, suddenly attacked me with a knife. I retaliated, somehow redirecting the blade back at him and killing him. I then went back into the classroom, confirmed the killer's description to the witnesses, and informed them he was dead.
