Graduation Elevator Conflict

·2 min read·348 words
The dream began with the final steps required to complete high school ceremonies and receive my certificate. It involved a specific elevator journey: going up, then coming back down. I completed this sequence. Before entering, I confirmed, "This is where I need to go?" and received an affirmative response. The Conflict Upon exiting the elevator at the bottom, a man demanded an additional 20 rand for the ride. I vehemently protested, "You never mentioned this extra 20 rand! I specifically asked if I needed to go up because I'd already paid for my graduation. Why would I pay more? You never informed me of this additional cost. I refuse to pay!" Angrily, I cursed at him and walked away. The man, however, began to follow me. What followed was a comically extended chase sequence: no matter what I did to evade him, he relentlessly pursued me. The Revelation Eventually, during this pursuit, a realization dawned on me: the money he was demanding wasn't actually for the elevator ride itself. Instead, the school had seemingly arranged for him to sell me something else for 20 rand upon my completion of the elevator journey. I made one final attempt to shake him off, but it proved futile; he still found me. Resigned, I decided to confront him directly, stating: "I'm not paying that 20 rand! You never informed me of this charge at the bottom. Furthermore, this 20 rand isn't even for the elevator; it's for something entirely different. I won't pay for it!" The Final Confrontation In response, he produced the item he was trying to sell. It immediately became clear that even if I were to pay the 20 rand, I would still incur further costs for additional items or services that the initial payment didn't cover. I reiterated, "No, I'm not going to pay for it." He insisted, "No, you must pay. The school instructed me to sell this to you once you graduate." I turned to another nearby person, who reacted with similar indignation, exclaiming, "No, what the hell is this?!" The dream then faded out.
